Hi All , IMay be this brief information will help for starters.
when you say network security , this is a very wide term what you are using , ..in laymans terms , its like you are intersted in software domain. within network security , you have multiple sub technologies/field) s. 1) Firewall - (cisco Pix , Checkpoint , Sonicwall , Juniper) 2) IDS(Intrusion detection systems) - (Snort , Cicso products etc) 3) IPs ( Intrusion prevention systems) - (MCafee , Cisco) All these come with their own certifications too .. so it depends on which technology an individual is intersted in. There is also an other field called IS (Information security) and also VM (Vulnerability Management) While information security deals with protecting any information you obtain , VM deals with identifying security flaws in a given field and exploiting them. Certification like CEH , ECSA , LPT , SANS (GPEN) gives you more details about how to find the flaws in the security system and exploit them/fix them. Certifications like : CISSP , CISA , CISM - gives you the guidelines that needs to be followed in an organisation during implementation of different services and how to do auditing based on some of the information collected.
