Hello, If you are really interested in working on Unix/Linux then one area is Rebuilding the Linux Kernel. Here you will be able to get an opportunity to re-write a networking module or build a new one. Or perhaps write your own firewall. I will be interested in this area. However as suggested you need to divide your time in right proportion so that you do not ignore the course work of your final semester.
