Hello Gururaj: Welcome to TWINCLING Society. It was a pleasure to hear your introdcution during the TSM on XML technologies. You have taken a very pragmatic approach towards windows to Linux migration. A successful migration has more to do with how the user feels about the overall experience rather than the technical aspects. You will be glad to know that Linux kernel has had a USB subsystem since 1998. Now that's the technology aspect. Does that mean all devices will work fine ? Not really. What happens is that the proprietary vendor drivers not only provide base USB functionality but also patched workaround for hardware bugs and additional logic for vendor specific extensions. These are typically not documented in the Data sheet which is rarely available if at all. Hence, the OpenSource USB driver will be a great implementation as far as USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 specification is concerned but not for a specific device. Most USB related issues are actually USB controller timing issues. Very irritating for the user but not decipherable without vendor assistance. Mepis 6.5 is released with 2.6.15 kernel http://www.mepis.org/node/12162 So hopefully, the next release must address some of the bugs. Keep tuned. thanks Saifi.
