I think the new Athlon AMD 64 bit Dual Core is better than Turion. I know it to be available with Compaq. U shud be able to find most details on the net. For 32K there is one available with Vista pre-installed (I wud prefer free dos for a lower price and install ubuntu though! ;)).
The reviews of Vista are not so great so u shud try and get a deal if possible for some laptop with pre-installed XP. I love Thinkpad for work most but sadly they don't have any AMD laptops. Sony is sad... Amongst Compaq/HP, Dell & Acer that do come with AMD - I like Compaq best but people have good reviews for Dell also.
