Why focus on Scripting ? A lot of time is spent in scripting just make it work in shell or exclusively in langugages like PERL, PHP, Groovy, Tcl, RUBY, awk-grep-sed combo etc. Over a period in time, the scripts gain in complexity and engineers/administrators find it difficult to enhance those scripts. By understanding the facilities and underlying architecture of shell script runtime, variable scoping and aliasing, and Ruby runtime model, from an engineer's perspective, effective code can be written. When making a choice between, judicious use of "Time" vs using something for "Free", it helps to have a good understanding of issues involved. Competitive advantage is gained by reusability of patterned code and saving on time. Writing code that works with standard UNIX/BSD/Linux shell features and is closely compatible with Ruby programming language helps create software value. Scripting for Administrators and Developers presentation will highlight the judicious choices that one needs to make while working with scripts.
