Hi Billy: Do you have a rsync mirror setting in /etc/make.conf ? It should look like SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" >From a practical perspective, i'd suggest running emerge --sync once at the time of Gentoo installation. Not withstanding arguments about security, patches, you will have a more manageable system else you may find post 'emerge --sync' that many packages need updating.
