I've charged by the inch before. Of course you have to have a minimum, so first 12" is so much (this covers warping time), and then so much for each extra inch. And you can vary the amount based on materials (cotton vs reeled silk) and complexity (simple turning vs lots of individual turning). Doing it this way the customer at least knows why I'm chargin what I'm charging instead of apparently pulling a number out of the air.
I hate doing commissions tho, so I charge a lot. That way if they decide to pay it, it is worth my time to create it. If it is a band that I've already made then I base the price on how much I like it and whether I want to part with it or not. Each band is a work of art that is lovingly crafted. If I deplete my band stash by selling cheap then I don't have those one of a kind gifts for the people who really matter.
