Are you being prompted by a login box when you access
direct_messages.xml via a browser?

It sounds like you aren't correctly performing basic authentication
with the Delphi HTTP library. I don't have much experience with that
language so I can't guide you here. Can you confirm that you can
access the correct results from the verify_credentials method [1]
through your Delphi application?
