Instead of using
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(username, password);
try the following (sorry it's in C#) as .NET will try an
unauthenticated request first, before trying an authenticated
request :
byte[] encbuff = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(username +
":" + password);
String enc = Convert.ToBase64String(encbuff);
request.Headers.Add("Authorization", "Basic " + enc);
