The Facebook API has a FQL query that allows one to retrieve the number of "Likes" or "Shares" a particular URL got.
I can certainly find a way to use the Twitter Search API to retrieve the raw statuses that mention a particular URL... but it seems like overkill when all I would like is the count... the number of statuses that mention that URL. Is there a way to simply retrieve _just_ the count of URL mentions?
