It’s still important to point out, though, WHY a separate identifier for Coyhaique exists. It is because UTC-03 has been observed year-round in the Aysén Region since March 2025, which makes that zone functionally different from both America/Santiago (which still observes DST) and America/Punta_Arenas (which changed to year-round UTC-03 in 2016). It is NOT because Coyhaique “has a distinct regional identity and administrative significance,” or because it is “the administrative, commercial, and logistical center of the Aysén Region,” or because travelers fly in and out of Coyhaique, or because Coyhaique is physically distant from Santiago, or for any number of reasons unrelated to civil timekeeping. It is also not because some systems and applications expose raw tz identifiers to users, causing distress among some users who do not live in the named city. https://data.iana.org/time-zones/theory.html I admire the immense tolerance of list administrators and experts for continued requests for vanity aliases, but it does baffle me. -- Doug Ewell, CC, ALB | Lakewood, CO, US | ewellic.org
