We were using the 1.6 version of the realport driver on a Dell SMP server.
When we boot up using the SMP kernel on Red Hat AS 2.1 everything was fine
until multiple users start logging in and using the dumb terminals attached
to the Red Hat machine via the digi. Shortly after the users logged in and
started to input data, the system would freeze. If no users are on the
terminals or just one (myself seeing how it works), the system would be
fine. I was told that there was an issue with that driver when running SMP.
So, I contacted digi and they confirmed and gave me an updated driver that
contains the fix - ver 1.7. I haven't yet to confirm that the bug is indeed
fixed. The Dell server is a two way, but turns out it only has one cpu. We
shouldn't have been running the SMP kernel to begin with. Nevertheless the
bug was real and digi admitted to it. We will be testing very soon with a
borrowed machine. I plan to do a mock conversion one night by patching in
the digi cables where there are currently annex termserver cables, go to
each terminal in the place and run a paragraph that loops the display of a
file non stop on every terminal in the place. I will then have people log
in on some PC's and do some keypunching etc... This should be a good test
to see how stable everything is (as far as the digi operation goes). I will
probably let the 'loops' run all night and come in early in the am to see if
this haven't locked up. Im not sure if your hardware runs the realport
driver or not. However, its something to watch out for.
Anthony

Could you elaborate, or contact me off-list, re: RH SMP kernel problems
with digi driver? I am upgrading a site that uses Digi etherlite devices
and the realport driver. The new server is a hyper-threaded P4, which
RH9 sees as two CPUs, and thus uses the SMP kernel by default.

We are still messing with digi portservers. It turned out that there
was a bug in the driver that prevented it from working with the SMP
kernel.
