Uni_VERSE_ I-types are probably best explained in the 
Uni_DATA_  manual.

They have a much better introduction if you are new to the topic and it
is mostly applicable to UV.
The UD manual (can't remember which) probably calls them "Virtual
Attributes" or "V-items".  Start there, then check the UV manual for
differences.  There are some.  UV has nicer MV-handing functions (see UV
Basic Ref, Appendix A, String Handling Table).
