Surely this would help with any speed problems? ---------------------------------------- Couldn't agree with you more, although speed is not a problem - but the product which is used for the majority of our older programs does not support the use of file handles being opened into COMMON. File handles are generated automatically to some arbitrary number which we dare not anticipate. The whole structure of the product is linked around these automatic Opens, Reads and Writes. We are thinking of how we can get around this obvious shortcoming as it has bitten us in a number of ways recently, specifically losing locks which we thought we were still holding. (If you open a file then end the program you lose the lock - implicit close file - ouch!) On this specific problem we have been able to reproduce the problem and I have a theory as to the reason. We repeated the process, opening 3 files repeatedly and watched the size of the process grow by about 0.1kb every 5 seconds. At about 134kb it died. One of these files has a trigger so we may have encountered a leak with this trigger. I think I have read that this has been fixed in a later patch. Now if only we could get our Linux box to accept telnet we would be on the way to upgrading. We had thought we would stay with UV 10.0.10 while still on AIX, but maybe I will review that based on this experience. Mind you this was a End of Year blip. I am about to contact IBM for assistance with Linux. Thanks for all your suggestions - none have cured the problem. Sara Burns Sara Burns (SEB) Development Team Leader
