Interesting! You are probably on Unix/Linux whereas I did my test on Windows. The representation of newline is different between the platform types. So, on Windows -2 (which leads to a byte containing char(254) - a field mark) gets translated to a CR LF pair. On Unix it just becomes a line feed. Quite why it ends up as -246 eludes me and, to be honest, I don't care!
