Basically we run a real-time spread betting and share dealing system which
receives thousands of price updates per second. At busy times we could see the
main server running at 99% cpu load for extensive periods. Under these
conditions dynamic files can be unreliable as it would appear that there is
not enough spare CPU capacity for the split and merges to function. As dynamic
they corrupted every time; as hashed they never did.

The programs have been redesigned since then and the load is not quite so
dramatic but we've stayed with the hash files. The files that kept corrupting
weren't that large, only about 5000 records of about 10 fields but they were
being updated several times a second.

Adrian...could you give me specifics about why you dropped the dynamic files
in favor of hashed? And how large were your files?

Thanks,
Debbie Reeves
