The telnet connections aren't affected by the same delay that the UVODBC is. And as far as I know we are using the server's IP in the UVODBC configuration. We also found on Windows servers that including the full path to the account you are connecting to instead of just the account name also improves performance, but it still doesn't remove the first query pause. Thanks for the suggestions though, I will have a play with the reverse dns lookups and see if that helps.
