Might be miles off here but I think that somewhere around UV 10.1.0 multi-threaded sorts were added.
The different processes performing the sort use a pipe in the UVTMP area to communicate. These pipes aren't handled by the rotating file pool so if you've got your full allocation (whatever your MFILES limit is + 8 system files) of files open you can't open another.
