Steve, We have both mvBase and Universe in-house and have tried moving file-saves and account-saves from mvBase to Universe by tape with no success at all.
If Unidata will support a file-restore or an account-restore from disk, then the problem is not the vtf interface. There may, however, be an incompatibility between the structures of the file-save or account-save, as there is between mvBase and Universe. You can try using the "C" option on the mvBase account-save to product a backward compatible (R83) tape, but this will automatically truncate all records larger than 32k, which could cause some loss of program code and possibly data. To solve this problem, we have written two programs, TAPE.DUMP and TAPE.LOAD, which perform a series of T-DUMPS and T-LOADS of selected files or all files in an account based on entries in the MD and carry with each DUMP the file characteristics needed to automatically recreate the file. These run on most mv databases. We've already done conversions from mvBase to Universe and from C.Itoh (R91) to Universe using tape. We could have done the conversion from mvBase to Universe using a vtf if Universe would support the T-LOAD command on a vtf file, but it won't, because you can not ASSIGN a vtf to an MTU at TCL in Universe (afaik). If you're interested, I'll ask one of our consultants who is a Unidata expert and has Unidata running in his office to port our TAPE.LOAD program to Unidata and test it with a vtf TAPE.DUMP made from mvBase. Please call me if you want to discuss this off-line.
