Eric,

1. Although I may have missed it, let's be sure that your UV/NT is
installed on an XP Pro machine, not on an XP Home machine. UV/NT is not
tested/certified for installation on XP Home.

2. While the prior comments have all been accurate, let me add a critical
note: the remote printer not only must be installed as a printer on your
UV/NT machine, but it must be installed on your UV/NT machine connected to
an lpr (Line Printer Remote) port created on your UV/NT machine if it is to
be used by Universe. You can look up "lpr ports" in XP Help for the details
on how to create an lpr port. The lpr port installation will allow you to
enter the path to your remote printer that you have described below and give
it a printer name (with no spaces) by which it will be known to Universe on
your UV/NT machine. The remote printer becomes a local printer on your
UV/NT machine by installing it on an lpr port on your UV/NT machine.

3. When you create the logical printer on the lpr port for this remote
printer, I suggest that you use the "Generic/Text" printer driver from the
"Generic" manufacturer in the Windows printer drivers list, regardless of
what kind of printer it is. This will enable you to send ESC sequences to
the printer to reconfigure it so that it will remain reconfigured after the
program that sends the ESC sequences closes.

4. If you name this remote printer UVDEFAULT on the UV/NT machine,
everything you print from Universe without using the SETPTR command should
print to it automatically.

5. If you name it anything other than UVDEFAULT, you will need to use
SETPTR to talk to it using the Windows printer name that you assigned to it
on your UV/NT machine.

6. Finally, are you aware that Universe on NT does not have a print
spooler like Universe on .nix (or like most of the other multivalue
databases)? UV/NT uses the Windows spooler, if you choose to do so in your
Windows printer installation, which fails to provide much of the spooler
functionality that you are used to having in UV/.nix. We have a solution to
this problem, called SpoolerPlus, if this is a concern for you.

Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.

hth,

Dave
