Just wondering how many of you have gone through similar Unix to Linux OS changes?
We migrated from UV 9.6.2.2 on IRIX to UV 10.1.4 on RH AS 3 last November.
- Are there issues when converting Universe data files from Unix/Solaris OS to Linux?
I had to run fnuxi against all our UV files, but that wasn't a problem. You may also need to do that when migrating from Solaris. I wrote a script to descend into each UV account directory and execute "fnuxi *".
- Is there difficulty getting printers to function properly on Linux?
We have no printer issues. We have a number of network connected laserjets as well as serial printers connected to Digi PortserverII termservers. We did have an initial issue with the laserjets losing PJL formatting for UV jobs still in the queue. The cause turned out to be the CUPS spooler restarting to rotate its log files on the weekend when the printers were paused due to full output trays. I moved the CUPS log rotation to a weekday afternoon and it hasn't happened since.
- Are changes required to any scripts and/or cron daemons running scripts on Linux?
Yes, I had to go through all of the various system utility scripts being run by cron and check for syntax problems. The changes were all minor. Things like changing "echo" to "echo -e". We have a lot of scripts and it probably took me about a week to modify and test everything.
- Has Linux proven to be more or less stable than Unix?
For us, less, but I think this has been due to the OS level replication that we're doing. We run Steeleye's LifeKeeper high availability software and it can put a high I/O load on the systems it's keeping in synch. We had an intermittant crashing problem for a few months that Steeleye support was fairly certain was due to a kernel scheduling bug. We upgraded the kernel and LifeKeeper and so far, so good. I do think that it may be more difficult for smaller software vendors to keep their products working stably with linux vs. unix because of how rapidly linux changes. I also think this will improve as linux matures.
- Any major issues with Universe 10.1.1/10.1.12?
