If you prefer forums, use the forums. I prefer the email list for the following reasons:
(1) If I had to remember to go to every forum on a regular basis, I simply wouldn't. Email comes in whether or not I remember it. (2) Most forums I've seen don't differentiate between messages I've read and those I haven't. If I log in, they assume I've looked at every message, so next time I can't see what's new to ME. In addition, it's no great effort to set up an email rule to sort my mail into different folders and then go to them when I have time to look at that topic. I certainly don't have email from this list coming into my main mailbox! As someone else pointed out, to me the advantages of "push" far outweigh those of "pull". If you'd rather go to the forum, feel free to do so. Seems to me, though, that the majority of users who have chimed in prefer the email list (which, by the way, does not seem to me to be a dying breed). The reason why we all use the list is because everyone is on here, I use the forum as well but no one is on there so it is pointless. The point is if we all used a forum (the existing one or a new one) we would get certain things that people complain about fixed like the time lag - which gets me on virtually every post. There are too many >postings that forswear any solution that doesn't result in a complicated mess of >things. I don't use forums. I read this mailing list in my spare time, or snatch moments at work. I find forums time-consuming, and a pain, and I have better things to do with my time (like working :-) At the end of the day, all too often I find that the web is a solution in search of a problem. It's the wrong tool for many jobs, and imho this is one of those situations. I rest my case with the fact that other people have pointed out - there ARE fora out there, including those on u2ug. Why are the fora unused while the mailing list carries on regardless? I put it to you - the reason is that most people worth listening to prefer a mailing list. Cheers, Wol -- Anthony W.
