We do this with both Oracle and SQLServer using the BCI. We have UniVerse on Red Hat Linux and use OpenLink as our ODBC Manager. This resides on the Linux server for Oracle and on an NT Server for SQLServer.
You simply connect to the database, create the SQL queries and then process the results. This is a quite different technique from that usually used in UniVerse but once you get used to it, quite easy. I am assuming the SAP database is SQL compliant. We also write extensively to Oracle both to a CRM system and to staging tables for our Data Warehouse.
