At ECL, if you type ED BP ../../etc/host
You get the /etc/host file in ED!

This works in Unidata because it simply forms the operating system level name by merging the file name and record id.

UniVerse has name translation rules for restricted characters and your example would end up as
  ?..?\..?\etc?\host
and, if using type 1 files rather than type 19, would then get further transformation into a two level directory structure.

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages.
