I use the documentation search features regularly. The main document (bkshelf.pdf) and index rely on relative structure. So, if you were to scatter the documents about your system at random, then it probably wouldn't work. Keep the basic structure intact and you can move them anywhere you like. It's not difficult. I know I've never tried very hard, but I've never bothered with the complete index precisely because every time I tried to use it, it was useless, for whatever reason.
