There's a good reason for that ... You can pass a multi-value list of id's to look up (or something like that). If it then returned several multi-valued results, separated by value marks, you'd have no way of knowing what came from where. That's the point behind my other comment over PI - that tried to be intelligent about whether a lower was or wasn't needed. And all it did was confuse.
