Satya Google Jonathan E Sisk for a good book on the architecture, (and it's built in BASIC programming & SQL language) if that's what you're looking for. There are many variations (Unidata / Universe / D3 Revelation / etc) but the basic database architecture is the same.
Pickwiki has source code as well as great articles. T24All has code and processes specific to jBase/Globus, but since jBase is Pick based, similar to Universe) it can help.
