I agree with your approach: prototype the button-pusher with a solenoid to ensure your idea works *before* you tear apart the working hardware -- a normal engineering approach.
Be sure to use a diode across the solenoid coil as was suggested elsewhere. If you're unsure of a circuit, I'm sure many of us could provide one if you ask. Good luck!
