You could of course simply save the file into a directory that is also a type 1/19 file to UV – I suppose it depends on the number of images involved, as a directory search will slow down, and yet ….. Might be interesting to find out WHERE in the business process Stewart was looking at deploying this ? Obviously HOW you approach the problem will vary depending on volumes.   If this was for a Proof of Delivery System (PODS), or maybe for incoming invoices/documents the volumes would be quite high, and the process would need to be as efficient as possible. Use whatever method to scan/import as a bmp/jpg. Base64 encode the file, and store it in UV. Simple matter to then have your indexing inside UV, and store the actual image in "web space" - can also drop a file element to allow arbitrary capture/loading of any file.
