If my memory serves me correct, Intel eventually had to get alpha intellectual property to get Intel 64 off the ground. And the guy behind AMD 64 was one of the architects of alpha. I had to chuckle after attending an HP session about converting from 32bit to 64bit Intel platforms, it was the same process as done with Alpha 10 years ago.
