That really depends on the protocol you choose to run over the wire.

HTTP, SMTP, POP3 and IMAP specify that CRLF is used for end of line.
LDAP has no concept of end of line since it is encapsulated in ASN.1.

I have implemented all of these using UV sockets. CallHTTP may be different,
but that is a feature of its HTTP implementation not the sockets.

It is up to the program using the sockets to prepare the data for the socket
to send and to interpret the responses, the sockets mechanism itself
although it has its own encapsulation rules, is guaranteed not to affect the
content passes by the application (blah blah OSI model blah blah).
