Now Available: STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND DATA MINING
*********************************************************************************************
The first issue of STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND DATA MINING
(www.interscience.wiley.com) is now available. The Journal solicits
articles which are consistent with its Aims and Scope and the Call for
Papers below, as well as 3-5 page Perspectives or Mini Literature Surveys
for important areas within statistical analysis and data mining.
Aims and Scope
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND DATA MINING addresses the broad area of data
analysis, including data mining algorithms, statistical approaches, and
practical applications. Topics include problems involving massive and
complex datasets, solutions utilizing innovative data mining algorithms
and/or novel statistical approaches, and the objective evaluation of
analyses and solutions. Of special interest are articles that describe
analytical techniques, and discuss their application to real problems, in
such a way that they are accessible and beneficial to domain experts
across science, engineering, and commerce.
The focus of the journal is on papers which satisfy one or more of the
following criteria:
* Solve data analysis problems associated with massive, complex
datasets
* Are application and solution oriented with a focus on solving real
problems
* Describe innovative data mining algorithms or novel statistical
approaches
* Compare and contrast techniques to solve a problem, along with an
objective evaluation of the analyses and the solutions
The goals of this interdisciplinary journal are to encourage
collaborations across disciplines, communication of novel data mining and
statistical techniques to both novices and experts involved in the
analysis of data from practical problems, and a principled evaluation of
analyses and solutions.
The 21st Century has become a Century of Data, with most domains striving
for useful general models for their mountains of data. Data mining and
statistical analysis are amongst the most effective bodies of methodology
and technology capable of producing useful general models from massive,
complex datasets.
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND DATA MINING will be a useful resource to those
solving practical problems, at the same time enabling them to benefit from
ideas developed in other domains. It will be an international journal,
with an interdisciplinary focus, covering areas which are becoming
increasingly important, and likely to remain so in the foreseeable future.

Call for Papers: Special Issue on Data Analytics for Decision Support
*********************************************************************************************
Guest Editors are Naoki Abe (IBM Research, [EMAIL PROTECTED]), Donald P.
Gaver (Naval Postgraduate School, [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and Myra Spiliopoulou
(Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, [EMAIL PROTECTED])
The purpose of this special issue is to feature recent advances in data
mining and statistical analysis within the challenging new area of data
analytics for decision support. Current decision makers rely upon a
variety of heterogeneous data and information fragments, to make
well-informed and productive decisions. Advanced methods of data mining,
machine learning and statistical analysis are utilized to enable them to
deal with massive data volumes, which arrive from different sources, in
different formats or granularities, and with possibly incomplete or
unreliable content. Methodological foundations are also needed to
guarantee the delivery of desired decision support within predefined
narrow time frames, as required for significant applications such as
crisis management or emergency surgery.
The area of data analytics for decision support covers business
applications ranging from strategic or tactical management, through
resource or process management, to marketing or distribution, and the
collaborations they require. It also involves a large variety of other
stakeholders, including government authorities responsible for defense,
environmental protection, homeland security, infrastructure, public
health, medicine, robotics and many more.
In this special issue, we solicit papers describing methodologies, tools
and successful solutions to facilitate decision support. We also welcome
potential data analytic responses to challenging decision support issues.
Paper submission deadline for this special issue: July 31, 2008.
