Call for Competition Interest

We will be holding a competition during the inaugural Sketch Recognition
workshop at IUI 2009. This is a wonderful opportunity for researchers to
compare their approaches to sketch recognition on the same domains. In the
past, competitions of a similar nature at other conferences have led to
advances in their fields. We hope the same will true for sketch recognition.

We will provide two competition tracks. Track 1 will consist of recognition
of fourteen isolated shapes from several domains, some of which will be
composed of multiple strokes. The shape classes will be: Sinusoid, Spiral,
Helix, Arrow, Rectangle, Ellipse, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, Bowtie, =, and X. Sample
data is available on the website. In Track 2, the competition will test the
ability to recognize and understand freely-drawn finite state machines. We
believe this track will be considerably more difficult than the second
track. Accuracy in this track will be judged on correctly grouping strokes,
recognizing shapes, and interpreting the sketch so that input strings can be
processed. Currently, more extensive descriptions of each track and a small
sample data set is provided for each track on the website, as well as
description of sketch input/output format.

We will be conducting data collection for each track online until December
31. At this point, a portion of the data collected will be distributed as an
additional training set. The remainder will form a portion of the test set
to be used at the workshop. Also, at the workshop, a kiosk will be set up to
collect additional test data onsite. To contribute to the training and test
set, please visit the contest website.

*Email of Intent* (Due December 15):

If you plan to compete in one of the competition tracks, submit an e-mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> expressing interest with the subject
"Competition Entry" by December 15. This needs to include:

 Team name, team members

University/Business Affiliation

The competition track(s) in which you plan to participate

The programming language/OS/environment you will be using

As this is the first time such a competition has been held in the field of
sketch recognition, your input is extremely valuable. Currently, we are
considering running recognizers from the command line with the option "-i "
specifying the input file location and "-o " specifying the output file
location. However, we do not want to limit your choices of programming
language or environment. Any thoughts, concerns, or suggestions are
appreciated.
