No, the use of natural language wasn't a "hey, this looks cool" type of decision. Ubiquity's use of natural language builds off what was learnt in Enso (made by the Humanized guys, who then started Ubiquity). That in turn was based off work done at the Raskin Center for Humane Interfaces, with Archy (which I wasn't involved with).
