They use a different splash screen system called "Bootsplash", which is a Kernel Patch. This system uses a high-res framebuffer. But, because our developers want Usplash to work on as many systems as possible, and high-res framebuffers don't work very good on older and other systems, we only use a 16 color VGA framebuffer.
