The optics of this are poor.

There are a plethora of different aspect ratios 
( 16:9, 16:10, 4:3, 5:4 ).

Working in a higher resolution does not help this facet.

The bottom line is that if one wishes to target the
various destination targets, you must target them
specifically.  As sabdfl has said, the size on the
release CD is limited.

SVG is another option, but then, as Ken noted at
the conference, you would need a method for X
to autodetect the resolution and apply the correct
aspect ratio wallpaper.
