I think less unobtrusive is better, and yes, exactly to highlight the window contents rather than the interface itself.

The interface should be nothing other than a container for what you're working on. A pretty container, yes (visions of Apple iPod and Macbook retail boxes), but a container nonetheless. We do not need to draw additional attention to the minimize/maximize/close because at this point who doesn't know where those buttons are or what they do? Even Apple's stupid and inane color-coded (or non-color-coded if you're using the 'graphite scheme) system of identical spheres of hard candy never proves to be a usability impediment. I'm not suggesting we make them as undifferentiated as that, because that's just silly.

In my opinion, the closer we can get to Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture (within reason) as far as 'content over interface' the better. Examples: http://www.brandspankingnew.net/img/screenshots/adobe_lightroom.jpg http://westsidegardener.com/articles/2006/images/aperture_full.jpg

But hey, maybe you're right. Afterall, there's a reason why interfaces don't already look like that, eh?

Hmm, what exactly do you dislike about the maximize/etc? I think those
buttons are perfect because they are simultaneously unobtrusive and
immediately obvious as to their functions.

Um maybe too unobtrusive? If you want to emphasize the content, yes,
but those three little buttons are still essential to users.
I like separately coloured titlebars heh (old-fashioned)

P.S. That wood background is rather nice and would work well with the
theme. I just worry it might not have quite enough 'personality' to be
the default background. However, I would definitely want to include that
as a preinstalled wallpaper for users to select (a nice light-colored
option for those who prefer that over the predominantly darker backgrounds).

True. My pick is definetely still the sexy heron-themed wallpaper! :)
