Although I'm not using Karmic, or any version of Ubuntu at the moment, but I have previously tried and tested F-Spot with no luck. It was slow, buggy and froze every single time when it got to my high-resolution TIF files. ~30GB worth. I eventually gave up. I did try Picasa once on Ubuntu 8.10 and it seemed to work fine, albeit some features being missing! But the main functions were there. And it was much faster and more responsive than F-Spot. Which was impressive considering it runs inside a built-in WINE container and is just a Windows port at heart.
