you actually dont require mannually install driver.

you can use envy to download and install then configure the driver and
graphics setting.

it is a better option I have seen

install envy from synaptic

system>administration>synaptic

search envy

select envyng-core

then select envyng-gtk for gnome version or envyng-qt for kde version
mark all

Select Apply

(For the geeks :P

sudo apt-get install envyng-core )

now after installation go to applications>system tool>envyng

to run and install your driver.

(for the geeks
Alt+F2
type envyng press enter)

select ATI or nVidia according to your graphics card. then you can manually
install your driver or automatically install the driver.
