if you could tell the address of xorg.logs exact path would have been a help. As I have this single machine now, cant experiment too long. And your analysis sounds very close to me. Cuz I trid the 'try to recover X-Server' that that enabled this login screen. Compiz or Any loader that brings in the Desktop is the reason behind this failure thats what I believe.
