Since you can see your GUI login screen. I think your X is not broken. Instead, your user profile session has corrupted configuration. You may try to remove .Xsession .Xauthority .dbus/ .gnome2 .gnome .gvfs etc configuration files and folders from your home directory. However, you can test by creating another user first to see if your X is really broken. Enter into command mode, create the user running
sudo adduser username Login with this user rebooting in GUI mode. Or you can just login with it and run startx for GUI. -- M.
