Please detail your problem with the browser. The default browser shipped
with Ubuntu is Firefox. Whats wrong with it?

You might need to install certain codecs to play certain media files. When
connected to the internet, try to open a media file. If needed, the player
will prompt to search for the codecs. Follow along and it'll be
automatically installed. That should solve the problem with sounds.
