My /etc/cups/printers.conf file is empty. I tried to delete and readd
the printer but it doesn't show up in the recognized devices list from
lpinfo as it did before so I can't add it. This is the advice in another
bug report (bug id #48916); to reinstall hplip, and now lpinfo shows:

direct hp:/no_device_found

In addition to the other devices in my previous output. I don't
understand the purpose of the hplip package though. Its description, "HP
Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP)" indicates something for HP
printers. Why is this required when I'm not using an HP printer? Is it
required at all? Why is printing on Linux so overly complicated with
several layers of drivers and components?

Output from lshw as well:

*-usb:1 UNCLAIMED
     description: Printer
     product: Samsung ML-1740 Series
     vendor: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
     physical id: 2
     bus info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:2
     version: 1.00
     serial: 2W61BAAX315562N0
     capabilities: usb-1.10 bidirectional
     configuration: maxpower=0mA speed=12.0MB/s

Why does the kernel recognize my printer is attached but CUPS doesn't?
