I have this same issue - Intel chipset :
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82946GZ/GL Integrated Graph
ics Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Unknown device 0cbf
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at fd800000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
I/O ports at ff00 [size=8]
Capabilities: <access denied>
xrandr --size 1440x900 works fine, but selecting the same resolution
via System->Preferences->ScreenResolution results in a broken display -
intially corrupted image of the desktop, then (after pressing Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace) flashing amber/black.
When the flashing screen has started, it's impossible to recover - no
virtual terminals can be accessed via Ctrl-Alt-F*, and Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace has no effect
Anyone know how to get xrandr to run at startup?
