Could it be due to the fact that partitions were uncleanly unmounted due to suspend failure (and hard reboot) and I think that hard-disk checking step is skipped when the laptop is using battery power.
Maybe mounting in read/write mode fails, causing the filesystems to be mounted in read only mode.
