The problem with muting 'External Amplifier' by default (or simply
removing it from being displayed) is that we will break functionality
(i.e., a regression from prior Ubuntu releases) for a significant
portion of AC'97 users who require that same mixer element to be
UNmuted. There is no foolproof method of extracting which revisions of
which codecs are affected.
This same symptom affects SB Live and several CMI cards (and is well
documented on the web).
