provide a little more information.
What version of Kubuntu are you running?
What version of kmail?
What version of KDE?
I tried to reproduce this in Intrepid with KDE4.1.1 and was unable to do
so. I selected a group of unread e-mails and deleted them as you
described. In my case kmail correctly calculated the unread mail count
for the folder. Do you still observe this bug
