I'm having the same problem with a Dell Inspiron 1420N (that laptop that Dell ships with Linux pre-installed). I was able to boot OK with the Alpha-6 live CD, and it booted OK after install. As of today (Sept 28) I did a full update-manager, so it should be the latest kernel. After the update, the machine crashes every time at bootup, with screen corruption. I can't get to my logs or anything else, as I can't boot.
