Ok, I think, I've found the problem.
We have a classroom of identical (HP dx5150MT) machines running Ubuntu
8.04 and some of them boots the 8.10 Beta Alternate CD normally, but
some of them don't ('No common CD-ROM drive was detected' message
appears). I looked into dmesg outputs and found out that those who boot,
have CD-ROM set as IDE Primary Master, but those who don't - Primary
Slave (HDD is SATA drive, so CD-ROM is the only PATA device).
Primary Master (boots 8.10):
[ 26.014978] ata3: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 bmdma 0xe400 irq 14
[ 26.014984] ata4: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xe408 irq 15
[ 26.351298] ata3.00: ATAPI: LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5236V, R$09, max UDMA/44
Primary Slave (doesn't boot 8.10):
[ 26.001739] ata3: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 bmdma 0xe400 irq 14
[ 26.001745] ata4: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0xe408 irq 15
[ 26.334443] ata3.01: ATAPI: LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5236V, R$09, max UDMA/44
Hope this helps,
k.
