Well---positive & negative answers....I can't get the old behavior-- asking for "splash" instead of "quiet splash" just gives a text display --not the old usplash with text below that I would really want to see, but at least I have had usplash two times in a row for the first time in months.
I followed the steps noted above--also, I made sure that my /etc/usplash.conf also was set to 1024x768--ran update-initramfs -u after all changes were made. I would like to know if a more "elegant" way could be found to " fix" this problem, but at least it seems to work right now.
